Prosthetic rehabilitation of teeth can be unhesitatingly called the basis of dental prosthetics. Though prosthetic rehabilitation is not the only occupation of prosthodontists, it is the most sought-after science which continues to actively develop, using the newest materials, technologies and scientific achievements.
From the point of view of classical dental prosthetics there are two main methods of teeth restoration: teeth restoration and prosthetic rehabilitation of teeth. The restoration has much to do with the restorer’s work because it is aimed at the maximum preservation of the original one. It is usually used in case of the partial decay of tooth, when two main methods are practiced: the method of dental inlays and the method of installation of pins, on which the artificial teeth are built up. The prosthetic rehabilitation of teeth offers much more variants. Here are the most well-known ones:
Types of prosthetics
Removable prosthetics. Nowadays removable prosthetics differs a lot from the yesterday’s ones by its materials, technologies and first of all its aesthetic dentures. If in the past “teeth in a glass” evoked only regret, today they are one of the most wide-spread and rather convenient constructions. It is easy to explain: the combination of their price, quality and aesthetic parameters is optimal. The main types of removable dentures are complete or partial laminar dentures (those “false teeth”), bugel dentures, removable little dentures (a kind of cosmetic denture), some overdentures. The simplest removable denture (laminar denture) is a plastic base, following the contours of the gums, with dentures inserted in it. But we must remember that each denture has a unique form, unique materials and construction as it is created for a particular patient. There are tens of materials and their combinations, used for removable dentures, and hundreds of their design features. The disadvantage of removable dentures is the need to remove them daily for the sake of a proper hygiene of the mouth and denture and prevention of diseases.
Non-removable prosthetics. Fixed dentures are very popular with the middle-aged people as they allow to cheaply and efficiently restore teeth, both their normal functioning and good appearance, in case of some teeth loss. Modern technologies have spread the range of indications for non-removable prosthetics and introduced various methods of restoration of lost teeth.
Bugel is an arch, so bugel prosthetics is prosthetics by means of arch-shaped constructions. The advantage of bugel dentures is a reliable fixation of teeth which is important in case of a lost tooth as well as parodontosis, when it is necessary to reliably fix a loose tooth. Modern high-tech bugel dentures are almost invisible for a casual observer, which enhances their aesthetic appeal.
Porcelain fused to metal crowns
The porcelain fused to metal crowns are almost always non-removable dentures. The advantages of porcelain fused to metal crowns are their excellent appearance and reasonable price. Their disadvantage is that there is often a need in a significant amount of tooth trimming to install the crown and of pulp removal to increase the tooth strength with dental inlays.
It is the restoration of tooth structure by means of inlays (internal attachments) and overlays (veneers). Microprosthetics is a promising branch of dental prosthetics, developing together with therapeutic (replacement of dental fillings with inlays) and orthodontic methods (change of appearance of the teeth). In fact, microprosthetics is not prosthetics, but restoration of partially decayed teeth.
They are dentures, placed on the bridge which is supported by the teeth, adjacent to the decayed teeth. It is a very popular type of prosthesis.
There are two types of overdenture solutions. One of them is related to dental bridges as the denture is glued to the adjacent tooth or fixed on it by means of special locks. Another variant is the use of root implants (special screws) on which the denture is screwed on. As it is quite easy for a dentist to unglue or screw off the denture, this type of prosthetics is called overdenture.
